Parish Register Publications from Scottish Indexes
Are these not available on Scotland’s People, or FamilySearch?
When we first indexed these records very few entries were available on ScotlandsPeople or FamilySearch. Since we published the registers some entries have been added to other websites, however not all.
You can search an index to these registers on www.scottishindexes.com, find out which you need and then either buy an entry or buy a PDF transcription of the entire register.
Finding pre-1855 Scottish birth, marriage and death records is by no means straightforward. If you are struggling to find the entry you need you may find our Learning Zone - Births, Marriages and Deaths in Scotland before 1855 helpful or get in touch and we will see what we can do to help.

Applegarth (Dumfriesshire) Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1694-1719
This book contains baptisms, marriages and burials which are to be found in the Kirk Session records of Applegarth Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. These records are held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The entries in the register are taken from two Kirk Session volumes: Volume 1 contains baptisms and marriages from 1694-1703; as well as four death entries from 1697-1702, and four baptism entries from 1763. Volume 2 contains baptisms from 1703-1719; marriages from 1703-1712; and a few mortcloth records from 1704-1715, as well as nine baptism entries from 1765-1766 and a marriage from 1763.

Applegarth (Dumfriesshire) Parish List 1697
This list is entitled "A list of examinable persons within this parish", and is to be found inserted in the Kirk Session records of Applegarth & Sibbaldbie Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, following the entry for July 25th, 1703. This list has not been dated, but, by comparing the handwriting and a close comparison of the list with the parish register, the list seems likely to have been compiled in the year 1697, certainly between the summer of 1696 and the summer of 1698. The original record is held at the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The list seems remarkably comprehensive. As in the case of all older Scottish records, married women and widows appear under their maiden surnames. The comparison with parish records which survive for the period suggests that this list may well be a list of all inhabitants aged about 12 years or over. The original writer has placed a short line underneath each household, which enables us to clearly see the households separately, invaluable in distinguishing family groups.

Bunkle & Preston (Berwickshire) Baptisms and Marriages 1684-1690
This book contains a transcription of the registers of baptisms and marriages for Bunkle & Preston Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. The original records are held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The entries in the register are taken from Volume 3 of the Kirk Session records. The surviving entries in this register are for baptisms and marriages from October 1684 to June 1690. It is clear that earlier leaves from this register have been removed, both from the page numbering, and the remains visible stuck in the binding. These entries are not to be found in the Old Parish Registers of Bunkle and Preston parish, which do not commence until 1704.

Castleton (Roxburghshire) Parish Register 1707-1710 and Hearth Tax 1695
This book contains baptisms and marriages found amongst the Kirk Session records of Castleton Parish, Roxburghshire, Scotland, for the period 1707-1710. These Kirk Session records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives at Hawick.
The Kirk Session volume that the entries have been taken from does cover the period before 1706 and after 1711, however, a series of baptism and marriage entries are only found in the years 1707-1710. It is likely that separate baptism and marriage registers for the other periods once existed, but have now been lost. The information found in these few surviving years is invaluable as this is over a generation before the earliest surviving entries found in the Castleton Old Parish Register, so they give a snapshot of a good number of the families in the parish at this much earlier period.
The Hearth Tax list for Castleton Parish has also been included, which was compiled in the year 1695. This comprises a very basic list of heads of households with the number of hearths in their houses, compiled for the purposes of collecting the Hearth Tax, granted by Parliament in 1690 on every hearth in the kingdom. It may prove useful as an early indication as to where families lived in the parish at this time.

Chirnside (Berwickshire) Burials 1817-1854
This book contains a transcription of the registers of deaths or burials for Chirnside parish, Berwickshire which are to be found amongst the Kirk Session records for Chirnside parish held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The main register, Volume 7, commences in January 1817, and the last burial entry in this volume is from August 1841. Another burial register is contained in Volume 8, which commences in August 1841, and we have transcribed until the year 1855, when civil registration of deaths commenced in Scotland.
These entries are not to be found in the Old Parish Register of Chornside parish (the burials for Chirnside in the Old Parish Register end in 1815), and it is believed they have not been transcribed before.

Eyemouth United Secession Church Baptisms 1841-1861 and Marriages 1843-1850
This book contains a transcription of baptisms and marriages found amongst the Kirk Session records of the Eyemouth United Secession Church (later Eyemouth United Presbyterian Church), Berwickshire, Scotland, covering the period 1841-1861. The original records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick, and it is believed they have not been transcribed or indexed before.
We have included all the entries from the register that survive. Unfortunately, there are only three marriages recorded, one in 1843 and two in 1850. Unfortunately also, differing from normal Scottish practice, the mother’s maiden name has in most cases not been recorded, and in some cases only the father’s name is to be found. However, the date of birth, as well as that of baptism, is given in almost all of the entries.

Galashiels (Selkirkshire) Parish Register 1666-1718
This book contains baptisms, marriages and burials which are to be found in the Kirk Session records of Galashiels Parish, Selkirkshire, Scotland. These records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick.
The entries in this register are taken from three Kirk Session volumes: Volume 1 contains baptisms from 1693-1718. Volume 5 contains baptisms from 1672-1690, plus three entries from 1666-1671, and a single entry from 1729; marriages from 1672-1689; and burials or mortcloth records from 1673-1683. Volume 6 contains one proclamation from 1719. Please bear in mind that it is not always clear whether the individual named in the mortcloth accounts is the deceased or the relative paying the funeral costs.
The vast majority of these entries are not to be found in the Old Parish Registers of Galashiels parish kept by the General Register Office (Scotland) at New Register House in Edinburgh, which doe not commence until the year 1714, and it is believed they have not been transcribed before.

Glenkens (Kirkcudbrightshire) Free Church Baptisms 1841-1857
This book contains a transcription of the baptisms found amongst the Kirk Session records of the Glenkens Free Church, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, covering the period 1841-1857. The original records are held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
We have included all the entries from the register up to 1857, shortly after the beginning of civil registration in Scotland in 1855. The level of detail is somewhat inconsistent, but the date of birth and occupation of the father, as well as the full names of both parents is given in most entries. This is a very rural area, and therefore we find only sixty baptisms recorded during this period.

Kelso (Roxburghshire) Relief Church Baptisms 1813-1819
This book contains baptisms found in the volumes of the Kirk Session records of the Relief Church Congregation of Kelso, Roxburghshire, for the period 1813-1819. These records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick.
We have included all the baptism entries from the register that survive. A later, or “new” register is referred to on the last page of this register, but its present whereabouts, if it has survived, is unknown.

Lauder (Berwickshire) Burial Register 1827-1838
This book contains a transcription of burials that are to be found in the Kirk Session records of Lauder Parish, Berwickshire, Scotland. These records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick, and it is believed they have not been transcribed before.
The register is in the form of a little notebook, possibly kept by the gravedigger. The spelling is eccentric to say the least, but we have endeavoured to transcribe the entries exactly as they appear in the register. A detailed note has been kept of the Cavers family, of Lauder, recording deaths from 1785 to 1849, but apart from these entries, the main record runs from June 1827 to November 1838, running to 520 entries in total.

Newton Stewart (Wigtownshire) Relief Church Baptisms 1791-1845
This book contains a transcription of the baptisms found amongst the Kirk Session records of the Newton Stewart Relief Church, Wigtownshire, Scotland, covering the period 1791-1845. The original records are held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh.
We have included all the baptism entries from the register that survive. The register includes one marriage, in 1807, and death dates are recorded next to the baptisms of a few of the children. Otherwise, no register of banns/marriages or deaths/burials is known to have survived. Until September 1824, the register appears to have been neatly and thoroughly kept. There are many entries after that date, but they have not been entered in order, with many being apparently recorded some years after the births.

Tinwald (Dumfriesshire) Marriage Register 1832-1854
This book contains a transcription of marriages that are to be found in the Kirk Session records of Tinwald Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. These records are held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, and it is believed they have not been transcribed before.
The entries in the register record both marriages that took place in Tinwald parish, as well as entries recording when banns were proclaimed in Tinwald parish church where one or both of the parties to the proposed marriage was a resident in Tinwald parish. The right hand column details (in pounds, shillings and pence) the fees paid by the parties for their proclamation of banns. Many entries record the actual place the marriage ceremony was conducted, traditionally the bride's home.

Westerkirk (Dumfriesshire) Burials 1706-1719, 1768-1854 and Irregular Marriages 1768-1824
This book contains transcriptions of registers of deaths or burials for Westerkirk parish, Dumfriesshire, presented along with a transcription of irregular marriages for which fines were paid and recorded in the parish accounts. The main register, Volume 7, is from 1805-1854, however an apparent duplicate register, running from 1842-1854 is found in Volume 16 of the Kirk Session records for Glencairn parish, Dumfriesshire. This record is slightly different in some entries, and includes some individuals not in the other record, so it has also been included here in full. From comparing the entries it would also appear that the second register records the date of death rather than the date of burial.
Prior to 1805, we rely on the mortcloth entries found in the accounts of Westerkirk Kirk Session. The mortcloth entries appear in Volume 4, from 1706-1719; and Volume 5, from 1768 onwards. There are a few mortcloth entries recorded in the accounts after the separate burial register was commenced in 1805 – if the entry does not appear in the burial records, we have transcribed it. If there are entries in both registers, and the mortcloth entry adds something, a footnote is added in the transcription of the burial register accordingly. It is important to note that it is not always obvious who the person named in the mortcloth is, as it may be the name of the deceased or the name of the relative or person who paid the funeral expenses. Additionally, some entries we have included are for money expended by the parish to bury or cover the funeral expenses of poor parishioners.
These entries are separate from and supplement the Church of Scotland Old Parish Register, and it is believed they have not been transcribed before.

West Linton (Peeblesshire) Associate Congregation Register 1748-1832
This book contains baptisms and marriages found amongst the Kirk Session records of the Associate Congregation of Linton, or West Linton, in Peeblesshire, Scotland. These Kirk Session records were formerly held by the National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh, and are now held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick.
We have included all the baptism, marriage and death records found. The surviving records cover the periods 1748-1753 and 1815-1832 for baptisms; 1750-1751 and 1812-1829 for marriages; and 1812-1817 for burials. There are 401 baptisms, 66 marriages, and 22 burials recorded.

Yetholm (Roxburghshire) Burgher (New Light) Parish Register 1824-1855
This book contains baptisms, marriages and deaths found in the volumes of the Kirk Session records of the Burgher (New Light) Congregation of Yetholm, Roxburghshire, for the period 1824-1855. These records are held by the Scottish Borders Archives in Hawick. Many entries in this register are not to be found in the Old Parish Registers, and there are also a substantial number of entries for births taking place in nearby parts of Northumberland.
The congregation was formed in the year 1818 after a split in the Original Associate (or Burgher, Old Light) congregation at Yetholm. From 1848 onwards this congregation became the Yetholm United Presbyterian Church. We have included all the baptism and marriage entries from the beginning of the register until 1855, they year of the introduction of civil registration in Scotland. There are only four death entries, relating to the deaths of elders of the congregation, which are on the last page of this transcription.
